[Reelout] Reelout Focus - China TONGZHI IN LOVE dir. Ruby Yang 2008 / USA / 30 min Oscar-winning director Ruby Yang presents the true stories of gay men torn between cultural tradition and the lures of city life in Beijing, China. "Frog" Cul and his friends revel in the freedom a cosmopolitan Beijing affords them, but a Chinese son's traditional solemn duty is to produce a child and carry forward the family line. That China's laws limit most families to a single child only compounds the pressure on gay men. Many resort to sham marriages. Can they be gay, and still be good sons? [Reelout] And Then Came Lola AND THEN CAME LOLA dir. Ellen Seldler & Megan Siler 2009 / USA / 70 min This wonderfully fun and sexy lesbian take on the classic Run Lola Run takes a whiz bang tour through the streets of San Francisco as a photographer named Lola (Ashleigh Sumner) races to get to a crucial meeting on time. As usual, Lola is running later. Her job and her girlfriend Casey are on the line and Lola has three chances to make it right. Bustling with creativity and fresh cinematic style And Then Came Lola packs in everything we want in a lesbian movie: Beautiful women, a great script, high-quality production values, and an exciting soundtrack of hot new music. "A highly entertaining mix of straight-forward (no pun intended) self-analysis, live-action déjà-vu, and silly animation, And Then Came Lola really is the whole package: drama, comedy, gorgeous women, suspense, mystery, fantasy, romance and even a little bit of smut." — ImageOUT PRECEDED BY: HOW THE GRINCH STOLE MY HEART dir. Gabrielle Zilkha 2009 / Canada / 10 min If Dr. Seuss had written a manual on dating the lesbian from hell, it might look something like this! ULTIMATE SUB ULTIMATE DOM dir. [Reelout] College Boys Live COLLEGE BOYS LIVE dir. George O'Donnell 2009 / USA / 90 min This is a fascinating rather than titillating exploration into the world of webcam voyeurism that may have some audiences questioning their own personal hobbies. In a quiet Orlando suburb three young men struggle to escape the wreckage of their pasts and create new lives for themselves. Their new home is CollegeBoysLive.com, a voyeur webcam house rigged with 32 cameras, where their every move is watched by thousands of paying members. The site's creator claims they are simply showing that "it's okay to be gay." But the neighbors insist it's a pornographic whorehouse and sue to have them evicted. This intimate and provocative documentary examines a complex subculture, but at its heart is the universal search for family and acceptance. See www.collegeboyslivemovie.com PRECEDED BY: LOST dir. Owen Eric Wood 2007 / Canada / 5 min This short work emulates the visual and literal aesthetics of gay dating websites to raise questions regarding the status of the Internet as a liberating medium. When: Thursday February 4th, 9pm Where: Ellis Auditorium, 58 University Avenue, Kingston Tickets: $10 ($9 for members), from Novel Idea (156 Princess Street) or Reelout (336a Barrie Street, 12-5pm, Mon-Fri - 613 549 REEL) - see www.reelout.com for details. |

[Reelout] Mr Right MR. RIGHT dir. Jacqueline Morris 2006 / UK / 86 min Louise thought she'd met the man of her dreams. But it all went wrong when she introduced him to her gay friends... Harry hates being a TV producer and dreams of leaving his job to travel the world. He loves Alex, an aspiring actor who is struggling to create an identity for himself as a performer. Rugby player William's nine-year old daughter is intent on sabotaging his relationships with new boyfriends, and he's finding it difficult to let Lawrence, a soap star, into his life. Lars is a handsome sometime model kept by Tom, a successful artist, who will forgive his every betrayal so long as Lars doesn't leave him. Rather than being polemical or crudely comic, it deals with adult subjects that affect us all. In a modern world where straight men are waking up to the fact that gay people are the gatekeepers of the cool in-set, Mr. Right gives a crash course on understanding how their clique works. The film features a hot soundtrack and includes a musical score by Toronto pianist Jacqueline Kroft. PRECEDED BY: PAT'S FIRST KISS dir. Pat Mills 2007 / Canada / 4 min Pat remembers his first kiss in this darkly comedic animated short. When: Friday 5th, 7pm Where: Ellis Auditorium, 58 University Avenue, Kingston Tickets: $10 ($9 for members), from Novel Idea (156 Princess Street) or Reelout (336a Barrie Street, 12-5pm, Mon-Fri - 613 549 REEL) - see www.reelout.com for details. |

[Reelout] Paris is Burning Black History Month — 20th Anniversary Screening PARIS IS BURNING dir. Jennie Livingston 1990 / USA / 71 min Twenty years ago, a small documentary film chronicling the sub-culture of the gay, African-American and Hispanic underclass living in NYC caused a critical and cultural sensation-Paris is Burning. Documentary filmmaker Livingston gave viewers an intimate and fascinating backstage pass to their world of decadent balls where various "Houses" of queens compete against one another in a wide range of contests. Where some drag pageants may give out awards for the queen who could best "pass" as a woman in the outside world, the balls in Paris is Burning give out awards for the queens who can best "pass" as upwardly mobile, white middle-class citizens. Once thought to be a secret society, fiercely underground, it was Madonna who brought this world to their mainstream with her hit song and dance number, Vogue — a trademark of the balls. A captivating look at a world of the disenfranchised who choose to make a more glamorous life for themselves - Paris is Burning is a scorcher not to be missed. Sondheim's Sweeney Todd At last, a Songheim Musical is coming to Kingston... The recent Tim Burton movie starred Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter as the partners in gore. Adam Eliot and Hannah Smith lend their gifted voices to the merchants of mayhem. Anton Kaduck is a revelation as the hanging judge. Megan Ready-Walters and her sweet soprano voice makes her the perfect ingenue. The Gothic church that is The Wellington Street Theatre is the perfect environment for Fleet Street and its sordid neighbourhood. Adam Eliot's Sweeney Todd arrives back in England after being unjustly sentenced for crimes he did not commit. All he ever loved has been taken from him and he is looking for revenge. He falls in with Hannah Smith's Mrs. Lovett, and between them they go on a murderous spree, which ultimately consumes them in the fires of hate. Sweeney Todd has been regarded for years more as urban legend than actual real-life flesh and bones. Cheap sordid novels in the early eighteen hundreds chilled and thrilled English readers. Sweeney Todd was the Freddy Kruger, the zombie horde, the vampire of his time. Some evidence exists to suggest that Mister Todd did himself exist. Sondheim and Wheeler have given Sweeney more noble cause for what he is driven to do, more noble than the avarice and greed accorded him by earlier writers, but in the end the result is the same. Sondheim's brilliant, complicated music and Hugh Wheeler's clever script are complicit in providing a great night's entertainment. When: February 25th, 26th and 27th at 7.30pm Where: Wellington Street Theatre, 126 Wellington Street Tickets: $15 from Grand Theatre Box Office, 218 Princess Street |
