Talk: A Conversation on Men and Feminisms How are men participating in feminist work for social change? Scott Morgensen will ask how men—located differently by race, nation, class, gender and sexuality--can respond to women’s movements and feminist theory by discussing the arguments of Black feminist writer bell hooks in her text Feminism is for Everybody (South End Press, 2000). He invites us to join in a conversation on feminisms and the ways all people, including men can engage them, in Canada, Kingston, or at Queen’s, and the many locations nearby or worldwide where we live our lives. [Reelout] Ferron: Girl on a Road, Secret Weapons FERRON: GIRL ON A ROAD dir. Gerry Rogers 2009 / Canada / 77 min Gerry Rogers (My Left Breast) returns to Kingston along with the subject of her latest doc-legendary Canadian and women's music icon, Ferron. Ferron is a folk-rock singer songwriter who delivers each performance with an enigmatic calm and beauty that has drawn comparisons to Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. Her intricate lyrics and guitar-driven melodies gained her serious credentials with critics and has inspired generations of women musicians including the Indigo Girls, Ani Difranco, and JD Samson (Le Tigre). Ferron has also faced her share of adversity from the same fans and followers of her music who fault her for including men in her band. Girl on a Road is in essence a concert movie that captures musical performances and backstage interviews with Ferron and her band members after a ten-year absence from touring. We are privy to intimate confessions and reflections both personal and professional including Ferron's flirtation with a major record label, her chaotic childhood and how her own identity as a woman, an Indian, a French-Canadian and as a lesbian is reflected in her life and in her art. [Reelout] Against a Trans Narrative Followed by an open discussion hosted by Niqolai Gryphon and Kalanthe Khaiat. AGAINST A TRANS NARRATIVE dir. Jules Rosskam 2009 / USA / 60 min Trans filmmaker Jules Rosskam's Against a Trans Narrative is a provocative and personal experimental documentary investigating dominant constructions of trans-masculine identity, gender, and the nature of community. By sensitively framing the film through his own personal journey within the trans-masculine community, Rosskam creates an electric and original investigation into gender politics and social self-identity. Blending a gender-busting combination of intimate diary footage, stylized dramatic scenes, spoken word performance, faux audition tapes, and roundtable interview footage to explore and initiate a dialogue between feminists, queers, and transfolk about the way we construct personal and historical narratives, careful attention is paid to the ways generation, race, class, and culture impact our understandings of gender. PRECEDED BY: BECOMING SUSAN dir. Inga Dievulyte 2008 / Canada / 8 min Toronto activist and trans-woman Susan Gapka is the subject of this documentary told in visual fragments as a metaphor for Susan's journey from pieces to a whole. [Reelout] Dare DARE dir. Adam Salky 2009 / USA / 100 min Emmy Rossum (Phantom of the Opera), Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights) and Ashley Springer (Teeth) head up a stellar cast including Ana Gasteyer (Mean Girls), Sandra Bernhard (Roseanne) and Alan Cumming (X2: X-Men United) in this captivating story of three high school seniors at the crossroads of their adult lives. When a pompous actor tells good girl Alexa (Rossum) that she hasn't lived, she embarks on a bold journey that takes her to mysterious bad boy Jonny (Gilford). Envious, her shy best friend Ben (Springer) also dares to pursue Johnny, complicating Alexa's romance and pushing the boundaries among the three friends. Each act of the story is told from a different character's point of view, adding complexity and emotional layers to what could have been another stereotypical teen movie. Dare seems to herald from the John Hughes school of screenwriting, where the pains and angst of teenaged life are easily translatable and identifiable to audiences of all ages. PRECEDED BY: AFFINITY dir. Kaitlyn Hatch 2008 / Canada / 8 min Claymation creations celebrate their queer pride in this short produced by the Quickdraw Animation Society in Calgary, Alberta. [Reelout] Pornography: A Thriller PORNOGRAPHY: A THRILLER dir. David Kittredge 2009 / USA / 113 min Mark Anton, a porn star at the height of his fame, disappears mysteriously and the mystery becomes an all-consuming passion for both another adult film star and a journalist in this twisted, surreal mystery reminiscent of David Lynch. Michael, an investigative journalist writing a book about porn stars, moves into a dream apartment where he stumbles across a videotape that might have captured Mark's final moments. However, as his investigations deepen, an untimely death and his boyfriend's strange behaviour smudge the lines between the real and the supernatural. At the same time, smug porn star Matt Stevens is penning a screenplay inspired by his dream about Mark. However, ghostly appearances and mysterious occurrences threaten both the production-and perhaps, himself. see www.pornographythemovie.com PRECEDED BY: GALACTIC DOCKING COMPANY dir. [Reelout] Fig Trees Director John Greyson in Attendance FIG TREES dir. John Greyson 2009 / Canada / 104 min Winner Teddy Award Berlin Film Festival 2009 Best Documentary In 1999, South African AIDS activist Zackie Achmat went on a treatment strike, refusing to take his pills until they were widely available to all South Africans. This symbolic act became a cause célèbre, helping build his group Treatment Action Campaign into a national movement—yet with each passing month, Zackie grew sicker... Fig Trees is a documentary opera about AIDS activists Tim McCaskell in Toronto and Zackie Achmat in Capetown, as narrated by an albino squirrel, an amputee busker and St. Teresa of Avila. Telling the story of Zackie’s treatment strike in song, and the larger story of the fight for pills on two continents, and across two decades, Fig Trees performs musical and political inversion on the music and words of Gertrude Stein’s 1934 avant-garde classic Four Saints in Three Acts. Using compositional techniques of chance, inversion, and polyphony, Fig Trees finds points of political harmony and musical convergence in operatic and documentary sequences that profile the overlapping stories of various activists. PRECEDED BY: NUESTRAS CARAS, NUESTRAS HISTORIAS (OUR FACES, OUR STORIES) dir. [Reelout] Citizen Nawi CITIZEN NAWI dir. Nissim Mossek 2007 / Israel / 80 min Citizen Nawi offers a brave and hopeful look at Ezra Nawi, a Sephardic Jew and relentless activist living in Israel. Nawi engages the Israeli Defense Force over the rights of Arab villagers in South Hebron and struggles with ultra-orthodox settlers to insure that the destitute Palestinians are not denied basic rights of health, education or housing. His personal life is equally complicated, with near-daily police harassment endured as a result of his political views as much as his sexual orientation. Nawi illegally shelters a handsome Palestinian man, Fuad, whom he falls in love with, only to see their union repeatedly questioned, berated and eventually disrupted. Neighbors hurl verbal abuse at the couple and often act the role of "proper citizens" when informing police of the forbidden arrangement between the two men. In a world devoid of encouraging developments and short on influential allies, Nawi shows tremendous- and at time, shockingly stubborn-conviction in his liberal beliefs. He refuses to be cowed by military force, social conventions or the legal process. Whether seeking justice for his imprisoned partner or working tirelessly to construct wells, clinics and schools, this truly independent Israeli citizen sets out to prove that change is possible through sheer willpower and determination. When: Sunday January 31st, 4pm Where: Ellis Auditorium, 58 University Avenue, Kingston Tickets: $10 ($9 for members), from Novel Idea (156 Princess Street) or Reelout (336a Barrie Street, 12-5pm, Mon-Fri - 613 549 REEL) - see www.reelout.com for details. |
