Kingston ahoy! (4 replies)

Hello queer Kingston.

I will be moving to Kingston at the end of August / beginning of September to start my master's in Gender Studies at Queen's. Looking around this forum, I see things are a little slow. But I'm hoping that there are at least some people reading, if not posting, who can potentially point me in the right direction on a couple of things... like a good place to live, queer- and trans- (and combat sport-, aha) friendly health services, and perhaps other helpful info as well. I will post more on these topics later.

A few words about me: I'm a 25-yo genderqueer transboy, originally from BC and currently living in Toronto. I am also an amateur boxer, a brunch cook, an anti-racist feminist, a writer, a filmmaker, an avid cyclist, a work-a-holic and a night owl.

I'm looking forward to Kingston and Queen's in the fall.

Fun things you can do with the forum - an introduction to BBcode (1 reply)

Some of you may be familiar with how an internet forum works, but I thought I'd make a guide on how to use some of the various features and BBcode on this forum.

Let's say you want to make a thread about Admiral Snuggles, your new kitten.

First you'd go to the appropriate subforum, in this case General Chat (Adm. Snuggles' French friend.) Hit "New Topic," right at the top, and you'll come to the "Start a New Topic" screen.

This screen is largely the same for both posting a reply to a thread and starting a new thread, so be sure to check at the top.

Now we have a variety of options for modifying text using BBcode. BBcode is a limited mark-up language that forums use in place of HTML because of security reasons. You can use it either by using the buttons at the top of the posting field, or by remembering the code.

First, a rundown of the available options (note that I have put a space in the first bracket of the example code so it won't be picked up by the forum, take that out!):

B Button: BOLD - code is [b ]text you want to bold[/b]
I Button: italics - code is [i ]text you want to be in italics[/i]
U Button: underline code is [u ]text you want to be underlined[/u]
<s class="bbcode">abc</s> Button: <s class="bbcode">strikethrough</s> - code is [s ]text you want a line through[/s]
X2 Button: subscript - code is [sub ]text you want in subscript[/sub]
X2 Button: superscript - code is [sup ]text you want in superscript[/sup]
Text Colour Button: Colorful text! - It is best to use the button for this, as it uses either RGB values or named colours that no living person has ever thought of, such as "rosybrown" - also, I know, I know, it's the American spelling. Can't be helped. Try not to use this too much, as some people have a harder time reading differently coloured text.
Text Size Button: Big text! - again, best to use the button. Don't post entirely in extra-large text all the time.
Code button:
allows for a code box which ignores line breaks
- code is [code ]text you wish to display as code[/code]
Center Text Button:
centers some text!
- code is [center ]text you wish to be centered on the screen[/center]
Horizontal Line Button:

- makes a horizontal line. code is [hr ] with no closing tag.

Continued in next post.

We've tried to set it up in a way that keeps topics grouped together so we don't have a hundred different forums, but that allows content to be sorted in a way that won't drive anyone crazy.

The board will no doubt evolve to fit the needs of you, the user, so expect changes to be made over the coming while.

If you have any questions or ideas, feel free to post them here!
