New grad student seeks home! (5 replies)

We are a boy and a cat, seeking a safe place to call home in Kingston in September. I (the boy) am set to begin my MA in Gender Studies at Queen’s; she, the cat, has patiently agreed to move with me yet again.

WHAT WE WANT: Ideally I would like to find an affordable bachelor or one-bedroom. I would also consider roommates, if the situation sounded good. I prefer not to live in areas densely populated by large packs of undergrads... unless they’re all awesome and have rad politics.

Necessities include: a space that is queer- and trans-friendly; a space that is cat-friendly; sufficient indoor room to store my bicycles.

Things that make me happy include: on-site laundry; balconies, yards or other outdoor spaces; gas-burning stoves; bathtubs; above-ground settings; respectful landlords.

ABOUT THE BOY: I am a 25-yo white queer transboy with an anti-oppressive feminist politic. I am a self-reflexive writer, filmmaker and academic. I am an amateur competitive boxer currently fighting out of the Newsgirls gym in Toronto; but don’t worry, I won’t hang a heavy bag from the ceiling or keep you up at night with the tappity-tap of my jump rope. I am a cyclist who loves his bikes dearly and is always on-board for two-wheeled adventures.

I’m a meat-eater and a good cook. I’m also a west-coaster and a country kid… not in the horses-and-pigs sense, but in the venison-and-backwoods sense. This has endowed me with a set of random skills and attributes. For instance: I have no fear of spiders, wasps, rodents or snakes. I am clumsy on stairs, but sure-footed on rocks, roots, logs and mountainsides. I can build you a fire and, with relative accuracy, tell you if that rustling in the bushes is a rodent, a reptile, a bird, or a peeping tom. Useful, I know.

All of the following words describe me: loving, friendly, stubborn, moody, playful, honest, creative, shy, strange, awkward, pessimistic, bold, supportive, aloof, loyal, insensitive, oversensitive, and contradictory.

ABOUT THE CAT: Jezebel is a tiny gray tabby with a heart three times the size of her body. Looking at her paws, you’d swear she was wearing cute white mittens and saucy knee-high boots. She loses her mind over queer masculinities, sometimes even more than her faggoty human companion (me) does.

She is a rescue who spent her earliest years in a less-than-ideal situation. Though she is loving and precious, she has residual issues such as one might expect from a brave little survivor. She and I share an understanding, and love one another despite our imperfections. If you let her, she’ll love you too.

-----------------------

If you know of a potential good fit for Jezebel and I, please email me: aneuman at fire-storm dot net. Thanks!

Looking around this forum, I see things are a little slow. But I'm hoping that there are at least some people reading, if not posting, who can potentially point me in the right direction on a couple of things... like a good place to live, queer- and trans- (and combat sport-, aha) friendly health services, and perhaps other helpful info as well. I will post more on these topics later.

A few words about me: I'm a 25-yo genderqueer transboy, originally from BC and currently living in Toronto. I am also an amateur boxer, a brunch cook, an anti-racist feminist, a writer, a filmmaker, an avid cyclist, a work-a-holic and a night owl.

I'm looking forward to Kingston and Queen's in the fall.

Sarnia Lambton Pride - 14-15 Aug (1 reply)

Didn't know there was a Pride in this part of the country? Well, your are not alone, neither did I. For various reasons, Sarnia-Lambton Pride was basically dead. There used to be one but it disappeared a couple of years ago.

Now, through the determination of a few people, Pride in Lambton county has been resurrected. With few resources these people have managed to put together a new Pride and are working hard to make it work.

A few weeks ago I discovered, quite by accident when I stumbled across a Facebook group, that a new Pride was being organized for this area. And I am asking for your support. If we can make this Pride rock then we will form the basis for bigger and better events in the future. And it is about time we shook up this place.

Pride weekend is the 14-15th of August and should be a good time for everyone.

Start off the weekend by attending The Heart of Broadway at the Imperial Theatre. Performed by the Starlight Summer Festival it is a spectacular show featuring music from some of the best musicals ever to hit Broadway. From ‘Camelot’ to ‘Spamalot’...Powerhouse entertainers from Toronto, Stratford and the Broadway productions of The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Ragtime, Evita, Joseph, Cats, Music Man and more, all star in this lavish presentation of your favourite musical moments. With its glorious gowns and elegant setting, this thrilling theatrical experience will carry you from laughter to tears as it travels straight to the ‘Heart of Broadway’…and yours.

On Saturday is our Family Pride afternoon. This free event will feature games, activities and entertainment for the kids and everyone is invited. There will also be tables with local vendors displaying their unique products and showing their support for the LGBT community. Running from noon until 5pm, Family Pride will be followed by a bbq which will give everyone a chance to just kick back and relax a little. But not for long because at 8pm the Pride dance kicks off.

Hosted by the fabulous Robyn Miss Conduct, this will be a party like no one has ever seen before in Sarnia-Lambton. There will be entertainment, dancing and some serious celebrating into the wee hours.

So, if you possibly can make it, come out and support Sarnia-Lambtons Pride as it arises from the ashes. We so desperately need your participation to keep this alive and growing. For more information, and to keep on top of what is going on, visit www.yourlambtonpride.com.

Thank you one and all for your support.

As a result, we've recognized what a very unique situation an alluring Affair offers.

We also remember what it was like for our first time out. Are people staring? Are people laughing at me?

Deerhurst Resort, our luscious venue for an alluring Affair, and the site of the 2010 G8 summit, is a brilliant opportunity for first-timers and people who have already been out but aren't completely comfortable.

This self-enclosed event (unless you are comfortable with wandering into town) is an excellent, safe and secure place; the staff has extensive experience with the LGBT audience and is completely looking forward to making our stay as comfortable and fun as possible.

So we are proud to announce;

Double Occupancy: We've had no-end of communication from first-timers about how safe and secure this event is. Because of our press release, we've also had a lot of chatter about people bringing family members or their support people. Because of all this, we've recognized what a unique event we're offering. We've gone back to all our suppliers, expressed the very important need to support first-timers and those with the experience to be mentors, and are pleased to offer the excellent rate of $879.99 for double occupancy (more than $100 savings) until September 1st. After September 1st,t he price returns to $989.99. Double occupancy includes accommodations (one suite for two people), all group meals, workshops, dance and entertainment for two.
Symmetry Of Homosexual Brain Resembles That Of Opposite Sex, Swedish Study Finds (no replies)

Quote:
ScienceDaily (Jun. 18, 2008) — Swedish researchers have found that some physical attributes of the homosexual brain resemble those found in the opposite sex, according to an article published online (June 16) in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Some psychological tests have shown differences between men and women in the extent to which they employ the brain’s hemispheres in verbal tasks. Other research has hinted that homosexuals may exhibit the tendencies of the opposite sex in brain behavior unrelated to sexual activity.

Ivanka Savic and Per Lindström, of the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, now report that the brains of heterosexual men and homosexual women are slightly asymmetric—the right hemisphere is larger than the left—and the brains of gay men and straight women are not.

Positron emission tomography (PET) scans taken by the researchers also show that in connectivity of the amygdala (which is important for emotional learning), lesbians resemble straight men, and gay men resemble straight women. The researchers analyzed the brains of 90 subjects, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess brain volume and PET data partly gleaned from previous olfactory studies.

One possible interpretation of the connectivity pattern in straight men and lesbians is that the amygdala is wired for a greater fight-or-flight response, the authors say.

This is not the best article on the subject, but I can't find the other I was reading. It shows another interesting aspect of the difference in brain structure in homosexuals - and is certainly fire for the nature vs. nurture debate. While interesting, we obviously still don't know enough about the brain to determine whether it's significant.

5 years of gay marriage in Canada! (no replies)

I kinda forgot, to be honest!

Quote:
Five years ago today, I put on a white suit and my good luck shoes and went to the office of the Ontario Court of Appeal to pick up a judgment.

The case was Halpern et al v. the Attorney-General of Canada et al. The result: “The Clerk is directed to immediately begin issuing marriage licences to same-sex couples.” Within hours, our clients Michael Leshner and Mike Stark were married in a Toronto courthouse. I could barely stand up during the ceremony; I was so emotional, my co-counsel, Joanna Radbord, had to hold me up.

Over the next few weeks, we attended many marriages – of our clients, colleagues and friends – and wept throughout each one. It was totally surreal. We had fought a huge fight, had invested hours and hours, alongside many, many, others. Many, including community members, thought we couldn't win it. It had been a battle royale: The government had argued against gay marriage in three different provinces for three years. They had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on expert reports, and if we calculated their time using Bay Street rates, many millions of dollars for the Attorneys-General to yield their litigation power. They said that marriage was “the foundation on which civilization was built” (and wondered why we felt excluded); that equal marriage “would have unintended consequences”; that it that could “make the institution less durable”; that marriage was “inherently procreative”; that equal marriage would remove incentives for heterosexuality and so all women would naturally become lesbians, and “men's contribution to society would be reduced to little more than a teaspoonful of sperm”; that gay marriage was linguistically impossible, just as it would be to say that “my boys are close sisters” or “he's a married bachelor” (that one actually scared me at first); and that gays and lesbians had caused or would cause the breakdown of the family.

Nobody expected that the judgment would have immediate effect. We argued for it – begged for it, truth be told – but between counsel felt that there was little prospect of an immediate remedy. That was the beauty of Halpern and the genius of Roy McMurtry, then the chief justice of Ontario. The judgment had immediate effect. Marriages proceeded. And everybody went on television and said “the genie is out of the bottle,” “the toothpaste is out of the tube,” “the horses are out of the barn” and, well, so it was. Just seven days after the judgment, the federal government announced that it would not appeal.
Videos
gay marriage

Gay marriage on November ballot in California

An initiative to outlaw gay marriage in California has qualified for the November ballot
The Globe and Mail

Nothing prepared us for the backlash and media saturation. For almost the entire summer of 2003, the newspapers were consumed by gay marriage, day after day of front-page stories, for weeks and weeks, tirades by those in opposition, threats by sociologists and “ethicists” about “the end of marriage” or “the rights of children to have a mother and a father,” and volumes of ranting and downright hateful letters to the editor. Few appeared to recognize that, at least legally and, well, practically, too, it seemed, the matter was decided.

Over the next three years, the issue certainly consumed more than its share of public debate. We had religious groups seeking the right to appeal the judgment, court decisions in favour of equal marriage from British Columbia, Quebec, Nova Scotia and the Yukon, the first same-sex divorce, a Reference before the Supreme Court of Canada, endless debate during two subsequent federal elections, and massive efforts made by Egale and political experts in Ottawa to get the bill passed. Eventually, by a free-vote at 9 p.m. on June 28, 2005, same-sex marriage became a reality across Canada. The judgment of the Court of Appeal for Ontario in Halpern has continued the tradition of Canadian human-rights jurisprudence showing international leadership. Perhaps the best indicator of how influential the case would become was that within weeks, both U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and the Pope came out with aggressively negative statements against Ontario's highest court (we joked about how those two events were the highest measure of the accomplishment).

In November, 2003, the Massachusetts court decision, the first American court decision in favour of equal marriage, cited Halpern at the operative part of its judgment, saying: “We face a problem similar to one that recently confronted the Court of Appeal for Ontario, the highest court of that Canadian province. … In holding that the limitation of civil marriage to opposite-sex couples violated the Charter, the Court of Appeal refined the common-law meaning of marriage. We concur with this remedy ...”

A few weeks ago, the California Court of Appeal became the second American appellate court to render judgment in favour of equal marriage. The decision, perhaps out of necessity, is without any doubt the most emotive and powerful of any of the judgments so far. It references Halpern and also two other Supreme Court of Canada sexual-orientation equality cases, Egan v. Canada and M. v. H.

It's estimated that about 15,000 gay or lesbian couples have been married in Canada since June 17, 2003. In Toronto, 4,650 licences had been issued to same-sex couples at the end of 2007, making up 6 per cent of the total issued in the period. Marriage rates have not declined. Divorce rates have not increased. The English language seems to have no problem accommodating the concept (in fact, several dictionaries have been amended). Nobody seems to be forcing churches to do things they don't want to do.

Other signs of the breakdown of the family, whatever that means anyhow, are not apparent. The opposing interest groups, including some big-spending American traditional family forces, have publicly announced their retreat. Of course, what that data doesn't show is that individual lives have changed. I have experienced and heard about my share of gay and lesbian weddings, all different and yet, often so similar. Again and again, couples speak of authenticity, and of greater feelings of citizenship and inclusion in families and communities. They tell of neighbours sewing their dresses, reuniting and acceptance with family members, the importance of the public declaration, the effect of the event on their relationships with others.

Many are surprised by how different they feel, both as a couple and in their lives generally. Our 12-year-old client Robbie Kemper perhaps said it best when he took to the microphone the day of the decision and declared, “Now nobody can say I don't have a real family.”

The wedding stories are poignant and astonishing. I continue to be awed. I don't want to leave the impression that discrimination has been eradicated, but things are just a little different. You can feel it in our cities. Not just on Church Street or Ste-Catherine, although you can feel it there, too. Yes, the pace of progress is slow, but today, on the fifth anniversary of Halpern, let's just celebrate that it worked. The Charter is not just some academic document.

And for all of the thousands of volunteers – people working with the Metropolitan Community Church, with Egale, all of the psychological and psychiatric associations and legal-interest groups, professors, lawyers, lobbyists, educators and thousands of other community volunteers, we all get to say, five years later, we were right. The sky has not fallen. A few people's lives are better, that's all. Heterosexuality remains remarkably popular. As the California Court of Appeal wrote just a few weeks ago, “There are enough marriage licenses to go around.”

When we argued the case before the Ontario Court of Appeal, then-chief justice Roy McMurtry interrupted my co-counsel, and said something like, “You are asking us to go further than any other country has gone to date, aren't you?” Joanna stood back from the lectern. She paused, and took a deep breath. I began scribbling answers for her. She didn't need them. The room was still. She simply said, “Yes, Chief Justice. And that's why I'm proud to be a Canadian.”

Today, five years later, as the judgment continues to change lives here and internationally, I simply say: Indeed. How proud we all should be that the Canadian vision of equality and freedom has life and meaning. And wings.

I'm so very glad to live in a place where I can not only be myself, but I am protected and treated as an equal.

Now comes the hard part - finding a husband!

research/survey (1 reply)

Hello all,

I'm doing a little bit of research/survey to try and find out about the
local Kingston queer community's attitudes towards/experiences
with/opinions of 3 of the mainstay business in the downtown area known as
'the hub' - namely Grizzly Grill, Stages and Ale House. My own
experiences with these establishments consist only of a few of the monthly
mens' dinners being held at the Grizzly Grill over the past 7 or 8 years
(all which were pleasant experiences) and one visit to Stages 10 years
before I was even a member of the queer community. I've never been inside
the Ale House. Other than the few blurbs I've read on here such as taxi
driver experiences with some of the yahooos that frequent some of the
establishments, I don't have much experience or knowledge about these
places.

I'd be interested in hearing any comments/opinions/experiences either
publicly or if you prefer privately, send to my email (pillar@kos.net) and any responses
will be treated with the utmost confidence.

I also understand that ownership of these establishments has recently
changed hands although that is only through the grapevine and I haven't
been able to confirm that but if anyone had more knowledge about that
aspect, and who the new owners are, I would also be interested in knowing.

For those who might be wondering why I'm interested in this information,
all I would say at this time is that I prefer to keep that confidential at
the moment for a few reasons, but I will gladly explain further in due
time. I would add that I am hoping that any information gathered will
help me in making a decision that I can assure you will have the best
interests of the both the queer community in Kingston as well as the queer
community in general at heart.

Look forward to seeing any responses....

Gary
a.k.a. djGAP
