The victim, Corey Berry, was found beaten to death in a park on Henderson Highway in the early morning hours of Good Friday. Sources told the Free Press there is reason to believe Berry, 50, may have been targeted because of his attire at the time, which included women's clothing. Investigators are now focusing on that aspect as a potential motive. No arrests have been made.

"My father never asked anyone for anything. He hated accepting charity," said Kyle Berry, the son of homicide victim Corey Berry.

"My father always helped others when they needed help and would give someone the shirt off his back. We feel horrible asking for charity from the public, but it's the only way we will not end up on the street." The family fears Berry's wife could lose her home due to the tragedy.
"There's a lot we don't know. It will depend on the circumstance. Was he attacked for the way he was dressed? Was this a case of someone who didn't like it and bashed him?" a justice source wondered Monday.

Officially, police said they didn't want to speculate on the circumstances of the city's 11th homicide of 2012. Family members have also declined to comment on specifics of the case. They have described Berry as an honest, hard-working, well-respected man. He is survived by his wife of 27 years and three grown children.

Berry's family said Monday they were shocked to hear the homicide was being treated as a potential hate crime.

"(This) is about an individual who loved nature and would walk through that park late at night because he loved peace and quiet and just loved listening to nature and watching the river flow," said Kyle Berry, Corey's son. "He loved camping and would spend every weekend in the summer out at Birds Hill Park. For him, Elmwood Park was that little piece of nature in a large city where he could go to relax."

Berry's body was found by a family member near a bench in the 300 block of Henderson Highway around 5 a.m. He had extensive upper-body injuries, although police have not released a cause of death.

Family members say Berry was returning from a late-evening walk when he was attacked.

Police are also continuing to investigating the 10th homicide of the year, which occurred just a few hours before Berry was killed. Allan Crockford, 42, was shot to death in the 600 block of Maryland Street just after midnight last Friday.

Family members said Crockford was walking from a nearby beer vendor with a relative when he became the victim of a robbery that turned deadly. No arrests have been made.

Crockford had recently celebrated his fourth wedding anniversary with Harriett Abraham-Crockford, a hospital worker. The couple had no children and lived near where Crockford died. His family said he was shot in the back.

Abraham-Crockford said her husband had worked in construction and studied computer technology.
