OPIRG stands for Ontario Public Interest Research Group. This whole PIRG movement started on university and college campuses in the 1970s as an attempt to provide an outlet for student energy. Over 200 PIRGs now operate in North America, 11 of which are located in Ontario. OPIRG-Kingston was established in 1992 and incorporated in February of 1993. We are funded by a $4.00 opt-outable student levy fee, which undergoes a student referendum every three years.

OPIRG's mandate is to serve as a training ground for activists. OPIRG seeks solutions to environmental and social justice issues by empowering concerned citizens. We draw on a framework that asserts the interconnectedness of all forms of oppression in our society and makes local connections to global issues.

OPIRG-Kingston currently has over 200 volunteers who organize a range of activities throughout the year. The majority of OPIRG-Kingston's volunteers consist of Queen's University students although our volunteer base also includes members of the larger Kingston community. One full-time staff person and a seven member volunteer Board of Directors form the core of OPIRG's operations. Working together using a consensus decision-making process, board and staff develop policy, budget, plan programming, and support the volunteers that make up OPIRG's Working Groups.
